The SBB RABe 501 is a 200-meter-long eleven-car articulated SBB train built by Stadler Rail.<\/p>\n

In 2012, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) invited tenders for a total of 29 trains for north-south traffic under the project name \"BeNe\" (Beschaffung Neue internationale Z\u00fcge). The trains were to be single-deck and not equipped with tilting technology, in contrast to the vehicles for east-west traffic, for which the SBB had ordered the Twindexx Swiss Express from Bombardier Transportation in 2010. In addition to the established manufacturers of long-distance trains Alstom Transport, Siemens Rail Systems and Patentes Talgo, the Swiss manufacturer Stadler also participated in the tender. Stadler successfully built regional trains, but could only show modified regional trains as long-distance products, which had been delivered to Austria and Norway. Stadler Rail used components from the previous vehicle families in the development of the train. After none of the suppliers was able to meet the necessary requirements, a second round of tendering was launched in which Siemens no longer participated. On 9 May 2014, it was announced that SBB had selected SMILE for 980 million Swiss francs. In addition, there was an option for the purchase of 92 further compositions. Stadler Rail was able to prevail over competing offers from Alstom and Talgo.<\/p>\n
