Rheingold was the name of a long-distance express train of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft and a Trans-Europ-Express (TEE) of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, which ran from Hoek van Holland or Amsterdam through the Rhine Valley to alternating destinations in Switzerland. From 1928 to 1939, the train ran with specially procured Pullman coaches of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, lastly from 1938 to Milan.

The Deutsche Bundesbahn reintroduced the train run after the Second World War in 1951 as a long-distance train (F), now with all three car classes. From 1962 onwards, the DB again used coaches specially designed for the Rheingold, including observation cars in the style of American "dome cars", and upgraded it to TEE in 1965. As the last TEE on the DB network, the train run was finally discontinued in 1987. Various carriages procured for the Rheingold have been preserved thanks to funding from the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport, among others, and are used for special trips and museum purposes.

From 1983, the carriages used in the TEE Rheingold were given an orange trim strip below the windows for emphasis, in addition to the now purple/ivory livery. The wing train to Munich had a large-capacity car converted into a so-called club car (Rheingold Club). In addition to meals, folkloric music performances and tourist presentations were also held in this car. The culinary offer of the club car was, however, modest compared to the pre-war Rheingold and the dining cars of the main train. Besides snacks such as hot dogs or a pair of white sausages with mustard and pretzels, travellers could only choose between a cold platter, goulash soup, chicken stew and a single changing main course called "Clubwagen-Schmankerl", such as Leberkäse with mustard and pretzels.

The model of the BR 103 can be equipped with one or two Powered Up drives or with one or two 9Volt drives.

The minimum radius of the locomotive and the wagons is R40.
