On the DB BR 042, the original boilers were made of a non-ageing-resistant steel grade St47k. These boilers already showed severe damage before 1945. Eventually, the operating pressure had to be reduced from 20 to 16 bar. However, this measure did not help to avert the damage and the danger of a boiler blowing up became greater and greater.

As with the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR, the Bundesbahn produced fully welded combustion chamber boilers, which were also used on the DB's class 03.10. The boilers proved to be good steam generators. The boilers proved to be good steam generators, at nominal output they delivered a good 2 tonnes more steam per hour than the original boiler. 40 locomotives were converted to oil firing.

Until 1968, the locomotives were used for express freight, passenger and fast trains. From 1968 onwards, all locomotives were stationed at Rheine depot and with the introduction of the EDP numbering scheme, the coal-fired machines were named series 041 and the oil-fired 042, and from Rheine they were only used for goods trains. The locomotives of the 041 series were discontinued as early as 1971.

The use of 042s in front of the heavy ore train "Langer Heinrich" is legendary. The train, which was hauled by two class 042 or 043 locomotives, consisted of 50 wagons with a total weight of 4000 tonnes.

The class 042 was one of the last steam locomotives of the German Federal Railway.

During the design process of the 41 series, the focus was on appearance and function. The model should therefore be driven at least on the R72 radius. To achieve good driving characteristics, the model can be motorised with two L-motors. In addition, a steam generator can be installed, battery box and IR receiver find their place in the tender.
