The train was first used on 15 May 1928 as the long-distance express train FFD Rheingold. From 1928 to 1936 it carried the international train number FFD 101, in the opposite direction FFD 102. The train carried only the (old) first and second car class. In addition to the fare for long-distance express trains, a special FFD surcharge had to be paid for its use on the German section of the line. This was RM 2 in second class and RM 3 in first class, regardless of the distance travelled.
The reproduction of the carriages required some complicated construction techniques to reproduce the original paintwork with several stripes. The car is equipped with a complete interior; even with a kitchen. This can be marvelled at via the middle removable roof segment.
