The class 151 is a series of electric locomotives for heavy goods train service delivered to the Deutsche Bundesbahn between 1972 and 1978. It was developed on the basis of experience with the standard locomotive construction programme.
The class 151 is the successor to the class 150 standard locomotives built until 1973. The first considerations for the development of the new class were made in 1969, when the Deutsche Bundesbahn was in urgent need of improving its competitive position vis-à-vis road freight transport. Due to the economic upswing, constantly increasing transport requirements had to be met.
The model is fully R40 compatible and can be equipped with one or two powered up drives. Alternatively, one or two 9V drives can be installed. The pantographs can be displayed retracted and extended.
The locomotive represents the version in traffic red with single-arm pantographs.
