Since the DR had assumed until the end that the extension of the transit lines to West Berlin and their electrification would be carried out by the Federal Republic of Germany, it was not until 1991 that the extension of certain line sections for more than 120 km/h was begun. Since the Deutsche Reichsbahn did not have any correspondingly fast locomotives available, new vehicles had to be procured. The class 212 was originally designed for 160km/h. After four pre-series locomotives (212 002 to 212 005, the serial number 001 was not reassigned as 212 001, like the former designation of the 243 001) delivered in 1990, a delivery of 35 series locomotives followed from 1991 onwards, already up to 11.0006 as 11.0006. The 35 locomotives of the class 212.0 (from 1992 class 112.0) were first used on the Berlin-Dresden line, which in the meantime had been upgraded for 160km/h. The 212.0 locomotives were also used on the Berlin-Dresden line.

The locomotive is the orient red version of the class 212/112 DR.

The locomotive can be motorized with one or two Powered Up drives and one or two 9 Volt motors !
