The VT 11.5 was developed in Germany for international TEE traffic with increased comfort. In 1957 MAN delivered 19 power cars, Linke-Hofmann-Busch 16 compartment cars and Wegmann & Co. eight open-plan cars, eight dining cars with dining room, bar and travel compartment as well as nine kitchen cars with fully electric kitchen and another dining room. Four compartment coaches were added in 1958 and three in 1963. The rear section of the power cars contained a small luggage compartment and two service compartments for train crew and customs or a train secretariat. Thus, seven-car trains (maximum ten-car trains were possible) with 122 seats and 46 seats in the dining compartments were formed, which were 130 metres long and had a total mass of 230 tonnes. These trains consisted of one engine car at each end of the train, two compartment cars, one open-plan car, one dining car and one kitchen car.

As in the prototype, 36 passengers can be seated in 6 compartments in the compartment coach. The roof, which can be removed in modules, also provides access to the toilet and luggage locker.
