The bogie wagons of type R, which always have four axles, are equipped with a solid, flat floor, usually made of wood, and, unless otherwise indicated by code letters, with stanchions and end shelves. Most types have short, removable swivel stanchions. They are particularly suitable for transporting long steel elements, building materials, machinery and large motor vehicles. In the 1990s, DB bought R wagons with load-bearing, long light-alloy stanchions and high end boards especially for the increasing timber transport. In 1998, DB had a total of about 17,000 R wagons in use.
