During the Second World War, the demand for freight locomotives rose sharply. In order to be able to put machines into service as quickly and cheaply as possible, the DRG commissioned so-called war locomotives. Probably the best known of these war locomotives is the class 52, of which a total of more than 7000 units were built.

They are closely related to the class 50, but the design was greatly simplified. This resulted in a 30% saving in working time and 12 tonnes of steel per locomotive.

The original plan of the management at the time gave the machines a maximum lifespan of 10 years, but nothing came of it due to the lost war. In the GDR, the locomotives remained in service, partially modernised, until the official end of steam locomotives in 1988 and beyond. Even the DBAG used modernised, so-called recolocomotives in scheduled service in the greater Berlin area until 1994.

The model shows the class 52.80 recolocomotive with wind deflectors and tub tender. The locomotive is powered by an L-motor and Powerfuctions system, a steam module can also be installed. With the coupling distance shown in the instructions, the model can already be run on the R56 radius, but the R72 radius is recommended.
