The remaining class 39 vehicles in the GDR were rebuilt into class 22 between 1958 and 1962 as part of the DR's reconstruction programme. The problems that the class 39 had were eliminated by, for example, the installation of a new boiler that had already been used on the reconstructed class 03 and 41. This resulted in a very economical and powerful locomotive.

The Reichsbahn also used the locomotives in heavy express service in the 01 round trips, this overloading of the actual passenger locomotives led to frame and cylinder damage. For this reason, the decommissioning of the newly modernised steam locomotives began in the 1960s.
