After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, the expansion of the transit routes to Berlin became more urgent and, due to political pressure, the class 212 locomotives developed by the DR were equipped with conventional AC technology. In order to procure several locomotives at short notice, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) together with the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) developed an improved version of the class 212 as class 112.1.

The locomotive represents the bordeaux version of the class.

The locomotive can be motorized with one or two Powered Up drives and one or two 9 Volt motors !
