The first examples of the class 50 were built in 1939. The beginning of World War 2 caused the demand for freight locomotives to rise sharply, so by 1945 3164 Class 50 locomotives had been built. After the war, they remained throughout Europe.
The original boiler was made of steel that was not resistant to ageing, as was usual for some unit locomotives, which is why the DB sometimes used class 52 boilers on its locomotives and the DR procured new-build boilers and reconstructed its Br 50 locomotives.
The class 50 was one of the most versatile locomotives of the unit programme. They were used in front of all types of trains, sporadically also in front of express trains. However, the strong twitching movements of the engine proved to be very uncomfortable for the locomotive crew at high speeds. Due to the low axle load of only 15t, the locomotive could also be used on branch lines.
The model is equipped with "Wagner" smoke deflectors, DRG lanterns and coupled with a T26 coal tender. It is motorised with the help of an L-motor and with the power function system. With the coupling distance shown in the manual, the model can run on R72 without any problems. To be able to run on smaller radii, the 1×4 lift arm thin between locomotive and tender must be exchanged for a 1×5 lift arm thin (32017).
A steam generator can be installed in the boiler, you can purchase this generator here:
