The class 243 or the class 212 is a universally usable electric locomotive that was designed in 1982 at the Reichsbahn. After reunification, the DB took over a large part of the locomotives. These were then managed there under the class 143 or the class 112.

Starting in 1976, the Deutsche Reichsbahn again pushed electrification of the lines due to the increase in oil consumption, after having relied entirely on diesel locomotives ten years earlier. In 1978, VEB Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke "Hans Beimler" Hennigsdorf (LEW), the only manufacturer of electric locomotives in the GDR, was commissioned to develop a lighter and technically more modern four-axle version for passenger train and medium-heavy freight service based on the proven heavy freight locomotive of the 250 series. This was to be able to replace the Class 211 locomotives in express train service and the Class 242 locomotives in freight train service without operational restrictions. The mechanical components were developed and manufactured in Hennigsdorf. The traction motors came from VEB Sachsenwerk Dresden.

Because this model cannot be motorized, we decided to equip the BR 143 with an interior.

This model is not prepared for motorization.
